Fr. Gabriel Maria Polo, RIP

Over the past week the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate having been in mourning the loss of Fr. Gabriel Maria Polo, who passed away following a heart attack in Cebu, Philippines.  He was forty-three years old, nineteen years in religious vows and twelve years a priest of Jesus Christ.

Fr. Gabriel for a time was a missionary in Anapolis, Brazil and latter was assigned to Stoke On Trent, England.  More recently he was the master of postulants and the superior of the formation house in Naga, Philippines.

I came to know Fr. Gabriel while I was assigned to the friary in Cornwall, England.  He was a fine friar and priest, kind and joyful, and he was particularly good to me.  I am honored to have called him a brother and a friend.

As I understand, he was interred yesterday is Cebu.

Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the consolation of his family.

I include here a video tribute to him, prepared by Fra Didacus as well as some photos from when he was assigned to England provided by Fr. Agnellus.

Now Fr. Gabriel has both hands free.

  1. What a lovely tribute for the oh-so-young Fr. Gabriel. My sincere condolences to all who loved him and miss him, and my prayers for all.

  2. Sorry for your loss and all those young men who would benefit from his guidance. I will say a prayer for him and the Franciscan Friars.

  3. Fr Angelo wonderful tribute I dont seem to be able to find the Video link you mentioned can you help.

A very befitting tribute from you Fr Angelo, as you said yourself he was your friend. Remembering you in prayer especially in the middle of your exams

    Ave Maria Brendan

  4. Sorry for your order’s loss Fr.

However on a side note this makes me question. Because your order is so young you didn’t have many full priests to start. Every priest lost is valuable. Will there be new ordinations to keep the FFI going?

  5. Ave Maria!

A wonderful tribute to Father Gabriel, Father Angelo. May the Good Lord, in His infinite mercy, grant him rest. I pray the Holy Spirit will bring a wave of warmth upon you, our dear brothers, and his family, who have entrusted him into the arms of Jesus, in such a beautiful way.

May the path of each FI Seminarian be made a little straighter and brighter now, with the aid of Fr. Gabriel’s good intercession.

And may our Lady shower graces upon you and console you, after such a huge earthly loss, ’til you meet again in Paradise!

    Ave Maria!

  6. Thank you for the news and lovely photos of Fr’s time in Stoke. We thank God for all that the Friars did at Burslem. We shall be celebrating a Requiem Mass for Fr Gabriel in St Joseph’s on Tuesday 9th at 7pm.

  7. Dear Father Angelo, I send my condolences to you and your brothers in the FFI. I will pray for the repose of his soul and for the voids that his loss has left in all of your hearts. God bless.

  8. Ave Maria!Dear Father-Great  pictures. So sorry for “our” loss…and he and is family will be kept in prayer. He was young, life is so fragile and can change in an instant. Makes you really stop and thank the Lord for each and every breath we take-even the more difficult or painful ones. Anyway, hope you are doing well– physically, emotionally, spiritually. We just got home from the annual Catholic camporee at Wolf Den in Pomfret. Remember the outdoor masses???- really LOVED doing that. The camporee is growing even though the number of families that homeschool is declining. We are learning through experience that we do NOT need to keep our kids at home and guarded 24-7 to ensure the safety of their souls, and we are keeping our circle of strong Catholics together, despite going in different directions. Life is good!Angela Ave Maria!

  9. Father Gabriel was a very kind and gentle person..he is full of life and laughter..I am still in shock and cannot believe that he’s gone….I am still expecting to see him with his smile…

  10. I remember Father Gabriel Polo fondly, He was assigned to a church where I usually attend mass during Sunday’s, After the mass I followed him just to ask for his hand and kiss it. So sad for his untimely demise. Yet he is now with our creator. He will surely be at peace with the Lord God. I will pray for his soul.
